Grow Gallia

Our Community ~ Our Future

In early 2011, the Gallia County Commissioners, Economic Development, and the Gallipolis City Commissioners, recognized Gallia County's need for a plan for the future.  The Gallia County Strategic Plan offered community participants the opportunity to develop and put into action real-world strategies to create their desired community.

People from all areas within the community were invited and encouraged to be part of the Gallia County Strategic Planning project.  Included were County and City Commissioners, the City Manager, the County  Economic Development Director, Chamber of Commerce staff and members, local business leaders, Community Improvement Corporation members, township trustees, leaders in education and health care, the tourism director, community organization representatives, social service and human resource representatives, the County Engineer, and other community participants interested in helping shape the future of Gallia County.

The group developed a vision for Gallia County. From the vision, the participants put together goals and strategies to help achieve the desired future. The vision, goals, and strategies are the product of group consensus and discussion process. They do not reflect any individual idea or opinion. There is no author for the strategic plan. It is a plan OF and FOR the community.

After much discussion and over the course of three meetings, the vision statement was developed:
“Gallia County is a thriving and socially engaged river community, promoting its strengths in health care, education, and infrastructure, to lead the region in industry growth, business opportunities, and the recreational and cultural enrichment of its citizens, while preserving its agricultural and historical heritage.”

Once the group began identifying the specific outcomes they would like to see for the community, four distinct areas were identified for growth and development.

1) Business & Economic Development
2) Transportation & Infrastructure
3) Build County Capacity
4) Gallipolis City Development

  • Business & Economic Development goals focus on building a stronger, sustainable business and industry base for Gallia County.  The overarching theme of this area is creating good jobs for residents, building a strong supply chain to support regional industry, growing the county's capacity to attract and maintain strong businesses, and supporting local businesses.

  • Gallipolis City Development goals focus on creating and maintaining a vibrant and growing city.  Many of these goals explore ways to develop the downtown area, utilize the river for recreation, and create and exciting energetic city in southern Ohio.

  • Building County Capacity goals explore ways to expand the county's ability to better meet the needs of its residents. Included in this area are goals to build the influence of the community's leaders with regional and state officials, ideas to help support the development of facilities for youth, and establishing reliable broadband access in all areas of the county.

  • Infrastructure and Transportation goals are directed to the development of essential highway and transportation projects in an effort to keep Gallia County an accessible and vital link to regional business, commerce and travel.

The more people and organizations that understand and work on the goals within Gallia County’s strategic plan, the more likely it is that we will be living in that desired community soon.
