Ohio River Activities

Gallia County is highlighted by events and experiences, unique only to Gallipolis.  The Ohio River flows deep with the heritage of nature and commerce, while offering many diverse travel and recreational opportunities

Raccoon Creek County Park

Raccoon Creek County Park features a 700 acre outdoor recreation area, centrally located in Gallia County.   The Park offers both natural areas and recreational facilities, available to visitors year round. Also offered are soccer programs and softball leagues, along with facilities for primitive camping. 

Gallia County Junior Fairgrounds

The Gallia County Junior Fair is held annually at the Fairgrounds.  The Fair provides Gallia County youth an opportunity to exhibit his or her talents and be recognized.  Gallia County Junior Fair has the distinction of being Ohio's largest Junior Fair.  The Fairgrounds is also home to the French 500 Flea Market.

Bob Evans Farm Festival

The Farm Festival is held annually the second full weekend in October. The Festival grounds were renovated in 2011, enhancing the layout with new food and dining tents, children's area, amphitheater and many other exciting new features. Over 100 crafters, multiple contests, demonstrations and primitive and RV camping, are an important part of this annual event. This celebration of the harvest season attracts thousands from miles around to Bob Evans Farm in Rio Grande, OH. 

Emancipation Celebration

The Emancipation Proclamation Celebration, observed in Gallia County continuously since 1863, is reported to be one of the longest continuous running celebrations of the Emancipation Proclamation in the United States.  As many as 2500 people have attended the celebration, coming throughout the United States and other countries.  History comes alive with Civil War re-enactments and other character portrayals.  The celebration provides a great arena to reflect upon the past, experience the present and project the future of African Americans in Southeastern Ohio and the Nation. 

Gallipolis in Bloom

As part of the national America in Bloom competition, Gallipolis in Bloom is designed to improve the quality of life in the community.  This is accomplished by promoting beautification programs, to encourage both personal and community involvement, through the use of flowers, plants, trees and other environmental and lifestyle enhancements. In 2013, Gallipolis received a three out of four overall bloom rating and the Outstanding Achievement Award in Floral Displays.

River Recreational Festival

For almost fifty years, the Annual River Recreation Festival has been held over the 4th of July, with the Ohio River as the backdrop.  The City Park provides the ideal venue for daily entertainment, a special Kids Day, outstanding food vendors, Queen contests, and an impressive parade and a Fireworks extravaganza. 

Gallipolis in Lights

Gallipolis in Lights was founded in 2013 by a volunteer based group of community minded individuals, from all areas of Gallipolis and Gallia County.  The group lit up the Gallipolis City Park over the holidays with a colorful lighted display and new house for Santa Claus.  The group will continue to work over the next four years to progressive fill Gallipolis with an abundance of holiday decor creating a Christmas Wonderland to build beautiful and lasting memories for children and grandchildren.
